The IBM® Power® 770 (9117-MMB) system is based on POWER7® processor-based technology. Use this information to find the system overview and the planning, installing, removing, replacing, configuring, and troubleshooting procedures.
The IBM 9117 Power 770 model MMD server is a symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), rack-mounted server. This modular system uses one to four enclosures that are four EIA units tall and housed in a 19-inch rack. Each enclosure contains four powerful POWER7+ processors and high density memory DIMMs using 4Gb technology. IBM continues to use a high performance PCIe Gen2, I/O backplane that was introduced with the model MMC.
Description:
IBM Power 770 9117-MMB Server Power7 2*16-Core P7 @ 3.1GHz 192GB RAM 146.8 GB x3.
Features:
The Power 770 model MMD enterprise server is designed to deliver an outstanding price-to-performance ratio, mainframe-inspired reliability and availability features, flexible capacity upgrades, and innovative virtualization technologies. The Power 770 model MMD features:
- Up to 64 IBM POWER7+ cores with four processor drawers per server
- One POWER7+ processor card per processor drawer: 16-core at 3.80 GHz or 12-core at 4.22 GHz
- Up to 4.0 TB of DDR3 memory with frequencies up to 1066 MHz, augmented with standard Active Memory Mirroring and optional Active Memory Expansion
- Enhanced I/O performance with two integrated POWER7+ I/O controllers per processor drawer
- Dynamic Platform Optimizer, a new option for managing memory and processor resources
- Active Memory Expansion optimized onto the processor chip
- 90 Days On/Off CoD Temporary Memory Enablement
- Logical partitions, up to 1000 per system
- Core Use HW Feature (EUC6) for 9117-MMD and Core Use HW Feature 10X (EUC7) for 9117-MMC 1-MMD
- EXP30 Ultra SSD I/O Drawer with integrated, high-performance SAS controllers
Available Memory Features
- 16 DIMM slots
- Low profile (LP) memory DIMMs in 2 GB and 16 GB sizes
- Very low profile (VLP) memory DIMMs in 4 GB and 8 GB sizes
- Orderable memory in DIMM pair increments
- Maximum configurable memory of 256 GB
Internal Disk Bays
- Two, optional internal disk bays, which share a single, SAS controller, are available.
- Internal disk bays support either SAS HDD or SAS SSD.
- Disk drives are not hot-swappable.
- HDD and SSD devices can’t be intermixed.
- HDDs are only supported with VLP memory DIMMs (4 GB and 8 GB).
- HDDs operate at 10K RPM and are available in 300, 600, and 900 GB sizes.
- SDD is available in 177 GB size and can be configured with LP or VLP memory DIMMs.
The disk drives are housed underneath the top cover of the node. One of the following options must be configured with each p260 node:
- Two HDD connectors
- Two SSD connectors
- No drive connectors
I/O Adapters
The following adapters can be used with the p260 compute node’s two I/O adapter slots:
- 4-port 10 Gb Ethernet
- 4-port 1 Gb Ethernet
- 2-port 8Gb FC
- 2-port QDR Infiniband
The first adapter slot must contain a 10 Gb or 1 GB Ethernet adapter; no customer useable integrated Ethernet ports are available. The only integrated network interface is reserved for exclusive use by the service processor. The 8Gb FC adapter supports N-Port ID virtualization (NPIV).
Additional p260 Features
Current Power Systems users will recognize many of the following features, which can be ordered on the p260 compute node:
- Factory de-configuration of processor cores can be used to reduce OS and PowerVM licensing and software maintenance (SWMA) charges.
- Active Memory Expansion is designed to improve memory utilization.
- Support for up to 10 virtual servers per configured core is available.
- The available PowerVM Edition includes: Express, Standard and Enterprise. With the Standard and Enterprise edition, up to 10 virtual servers can be configured per core.
- IBM i 7.1 and 6.1, AIX 7.1 and 6.1 and Linux (Red Hat and SUSE) are supported.
Virtualization Considerations
Virtualized network and disk virtualized are supported using a single PowerVM Virtual I/O (VIO) server. Adapter-allocation rules are similar to Power Systems servers. All ports associated with an adapter card are allocated to a single virtual server.
The maximum configuration for the p260 compute node is one 4-port Ethernet adapter and one 2-port 8 Gb FC adapter. Both of these adapters can be configured to create a single VIO server-based system. When configured with internal HDDs or SDDs, both drives are connected to a single SAS controller that can be allocated to a single virtual server or VIO server. Note that the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) isn’t supported with the p260 compute node.
